Is travel insurance expensive? Why should I have it?

We believe any trip is worth covering, so we have affordable flight insurance, as well as more comprehensive travel insurance plans. AirCare® starts at $26 for a direct, round trip flight and pays fast* for common flight mishaps like missed connections and flight delays. The ExactCare® line – ExactCare®, ExactCare Value®, and ExactCare Extra® – is comprehensive travel insurance with speedy claims processing and payment on approved claims. WaveCare® packs all the standard coverages of ExactCare and adds specific cruise disablement coverage to the plan. We'd be happy to walk through our trip protection plans with you. Where can I see a complete list of your plans?

The best way to compare our plans, is by getting a quote! Our plans page has a complete list of our trip insurance plans, which basically consists of AirCare®, WaveCare® and the ExactCare® line. We believe in simple, easy-to-understand travel insurance, so we've intentionally kept our plan line compact.

Does BHTP offer different types of travel insurance for different types of travel?

Yes. AirCare® automatically tracks flights and pays fixed amounts when you encounter common flight mishaps like flight delays, flight cancellations, and lost luggage. AirCare is the ideal flight and baggage protection plan. All ExactCare® plans are more comprehensive travel insurance plans that can help protect your trip deposits if you're forced to cancel, evacuate you in case of a medical emergency, fix an interrupted cruise, protect you when your tour operator goes bankrupt, provide travel medical insurance if you get sick or are injured on your trip, and more; ExactCare Extra® is a combination of adding some of AirCare's fixed benefits with traditional coverages. WaveCare® packs all the standard coverages of ExactCare and adds specific cruise disablement coverage to the plan and has specific coverages for those who choose to cruise. No matter the trip, BHTP has a travel insurance plan to protect it. 

What are the time limits for buying travel protection from BHTP?

You can buy a BHTP travel insurance policy up to 11:59 p.m. on the day before your flight departs, regardless of whether your flight leaves at 12:01 a.m. or 10 p.m. There are a couple of caveats to that: The flight cannot already be affected in some way, and the trip and travelers have to meet all eligibility requirements.

What makes your plans different from other travel insurance providers?

If my travel insurance claim is approved, how will I be paid?

Approved travel insurance claims are paid based on information you supply, to an account you specify. Your BHTP Burst® payment options (from fastest to slowest) are: payment into a personal checking account via a debit card, or payment by PayPal, EFT or check.

What if I have technical questions regarding your website or mobile application?

How can I modify an existing policy?

You can modify an existing travel insurance policy by logging in on the website or by calling us at 844-411-2487. Policy and claim service hours are 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Central Time Monday-Friday. However, no modifications are allowed after 11:59 p.m. on the day before you're scheduled to depart.

How do I file a claim on the website?

To create a claim, log in to your account on the website or in the BHTP app with the email you indicated on your travel insurance policy. Click "Create A Claim," then follow the prompts to start the process.

What if I buy a policy and decide I want different coverage?

Contact us. Call 844-411-2487, email assist@bhtp.com, use our live chat, or send a message through our app. We'll look over your travel plans and help you find the right travel insurance coverage. Note that policy and claim service center hours are 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Central Time Monday-Friday.

How long does it take you to pay travel insurance claims?

Many AirCare® claims can be processed and approved almost instantaneously. Other claims, including most ExactCare® and WaveCare® claims, can be paid in seconds (depending on your financial institution) once the claim is approved — but only if you've specified "debit card" as your BHTP Burst® payment preference. Claims can be paid via Electronic Funds Transfer or to a PayPal account in a matter of hours. Naturally, a paper check takes several days for processing and mailing. With Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection you choose how you want to get paid.

Can I check claim status anywhere?

With our mobile app, you can check claim status at a glance. You can also email us at assist@bhtp.com, or call us at 844-411-2487 or live chat us for a claim update. And you can always check travel insurance claim status when logged into your account on bhtp.com. Note that policy and claim service hours are 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Central Time Monday-Friday. 

Can you help me with my travel issues?

As they relate to travel insurance and travel assistance, yes. As they relate to that stinky guy in the middle seat, not so much. Doesn't my other insurance cover travel-related losses?

Do I have to have an account to quote plans?

Where can I find detailed explanations of what your plans cover?

Can I put non-family members on my travel insurance policy?

In most states, yes. A person traveling with you who is not your relative is considered to be a "traveling companion."

Why should I list my flights when buying ExactCare Extra®?

With ExactCare Extra®, if you provide your flight information prior to your departure date, flights can be tracked and claims can be automatically created on your behalf. Don’t know your flights when you’re ready to buy? No problem! You can enter flight information any time up to 11:59 p.m. on the day before you take off.

Why should a traveler buy a comprehensive travel insurance plan like ExactCare®?

The ExactCare® plan line is for travelers who want coverage for trip cancellation and trip interruption, emergency medical evacuation, and travel medical insurance. ExactCare Extra® adds coverage for flight delay and missed connections. WaveCare® adds specific cruise disablement coverage. Don't want those coverages? AirCare® flight insurance is a great alternative.

How do I know if ExactCare® is the best travel insurance for me?

Look at the type of trip you're covering. Are you traveling overseas for a vacation lasting a week or more? Does your trip involve multiple hotels, guides or charters? Do you want medical travel insurance on your trip above and beyond your current medical policy? Do you need emergency medical evacuation coverage? All these warrant coverage with an ExactCare® plan

Which ExactCare® plan is the best travel insurance for me?

Can I get ExactCare® even if I'm not going on an organized tour?

Yes, you can buy ExactCare® travel insurance plans to cover a trip that isn't an organized tour. However, your unused prepaid expenses as well as new additional transportation expenses will be covered under your trip cancellation benefits.

I'm a last-minute sort of person. How long can I wait before buying ExactCare®?

You can buy any ExactCare® plan up to 11:59 p.m. on the day before departure. However, you do get more benefits if you buy ExactCare® within 15 days of your initial trip deposit.

I'm traveling overseas. Is there anything different about buying ExactCare® for an overseas trip?

No. Just indicate your international destination when starting your quote. If you're buying ExactCare Extra® travel insurance, enter your flights so that they can be tracked and claims can be automatically created on your behalf.

What if I don't know my airline when I'm buying ExactCare®?

You can still purchase your ExactCare® plan without the information. Leave it blank and update your policy later once you know the details. With ExactCare Extra®, if you provide your flight information prior to your departure date, flights can be tracked and claims can be automatically created on your behalf.

I like doing things on my mobile device. Can I buy ExactCare® travel insurance on a mobile device?

If I use frequent-flyer miles to buy a ticket, or someone else pays for my trip, how does that affect my ExactCare® coverage and benefits?

Your travel insurance coverage levels won't change, as long as you save receipts showing your total cost of the trip. However, if you have a trip cost of $0 as a result of using frequent-flyer miles or having someone else pay for your trip, you won't have any trip cost to be reimbursed for under trip cancellation or trip interruption.

How does your medical coverage work?

It depends on how quickly you buy a ExactCare® travel insurance productIn most states, if you buy ExactCare®  within 15 days of your first trip payment, our emergency travel medical insurance is primary. We pay first on the covered part of your medical bills. If you purchase after that 15-day window, the coverage could be secondary, meaning your other health insurance pays first. Your policy has specifics on how medical coverage is handled in your state.

What do you consider to be a pre-existing medical condition and how does that affect my coverage?

In most states, pre-existing conditions are covered by all three ExactCare® plans, as part of our emergency travel medical coverage, if you buy your policy within 15 days of your initial trip payment. How does trip cancellation and interruption coverage work?

If you, a family member or a traveling companion's trip is affected by a natural disaster, sickness, or injury, there's a good chance your ExactCare® plan's trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage will be triggered. Read your travel insurance policy for a full list of covered reasons for trip cancellation/interruption.

How do ExactCare Extra®'s fixed benefits work?

Simple: If you have a flight delay and entered your flights when you bought ExactCare Extra®, flights can be tracked and claims can be automatically created on your behalf. If your luggage is lost or delayed, you can quickly move through the claim process by taking a picture of your baggage-irregularity report and uploading it to our mobile app or website. 

I've lost my visa.

The weather's looking iffy. Can I still buy AirCare®?

If severe weather is forecast for your destination or along your flight path, or if your flight has a well-documented history of repeatedly being delayed or cancelled, a specific flight segment may not be eligible for some AirCare® coverages. However, you can still purchase AirCare as your other flight segments may more than likely qualify. How is AirCare® different from travel protection I get through my credit card?

AirCare® flight insurance is travel insurance specifically for flights; it pays you when you experience common, approved travel inconveniences including a $1,000 paid benefit for covered tarmac delays. AirCare does not include travel-accident and accidental-death-and-dismemberment coverage like some credit cards. Because AirCare is not a traditional reimbursement plan (where you receive reimbursement for specific incurred losses) we don't ask for receipts. We pay you the full benefit amount, we pay fast,* let you tell us where you want claims payments deposited, and we're here to help with coverage and emergency assistance questions.

I tried to buy AirCare® but was rejected.

AirCare is not available if you are trying to buy it on your day of departure. Also, if severe weather is forecast for your destination or along your flight path, or if your flight has a well-documented history of repeatedly being delayed or cancelled, a specific flight segment may not be eligible for some AirCare® coverages. However, you can still purchase AirCare as your other flight segments may more than likely qualify.  You’ll be informed when you purchase if a flight segment is not covered and you’ll only be charged for those segments that qualify.  If you have questions about your AirCare purchase, send us a message  at assist@bhtp.com, call 844-411-2487, or start a live chat. We'll work you through the process. I have a reasonable connection, but AirCare® said the connection was too short.

Our standard for an acceptable flight connection is at least 51 minutes for both domestic and international flights. If that seems short, remember that not all airports are created equal. A 30-minute connection in one airport, where flights are on time and gates are close by, is more than reasonable. An hour and a quarter in some airports is borderline. A minimum of 51 minutes is reasonable for most airports most of the time.

My flight wasn't listed. Can I still buy AirCare®?

WaveCare Questions

Similar to the ExactCare® plans, WaveCare® is for travelers who want coverage for trip cancellation and trip interruption, emergency medical evacuation, and travel medical insurance when they cruise. WaveCare adds coverage for cruise disablement which provides a Fixed Benefit of $500 if the insured is confined for more than five hours on a cruise ship without power, food, water or restroom facilities.

How do I know WaveCare® is the best travel insurance for me?

WaveCare was built specifically with cruisers in mind. No. Just indicate your initial arrival destination when starting your quote.  You get all the same benefits* whether you are cruising the Inside Passage of Alaska, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean or any other cruising destination.
